Evaluation
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My media production was slightly different to many genres, the song has more of a folky feel to it and I feel it would not fit into main stream music. However that said the music video could appeal to many audiences, initially I was aiming it at the older audience with the artist being the main part in the video with plenty of shots of him singing but due to time constraints and clashing schedules we couldn’t fit in time to film so I had to use another male who was available. I do feel it works well though as I kept the original plan of filming him playing the piano, as the audience like to have featured the artist playing the instrument in the video especially when they have written the music themselves. Much like Jamie Cullen’s music videos he is nearly always playing the piano with the emphasis that he is playing it himself and singing it all himself.
The background I have used makes my artist stand out more and keeps the focus on him which is what I initially wanted because this would be his first single.
Having different shots of the male lead and female arguing acting out a narrative conforms to many different media conventions. Usually featured in music videos are couples and normally something happens within the video to break them up, this is what happens in mine with lots of quick fast paced shots to keep the audience interested.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary task?
The two compliment each other very well, I have put the shots in the same environment where my artist is playing the piano because I like the plain background. Having it pale blue keeps the atmosphere calm which also compliments the voice and feel of the song. My front cover is simple and I really like that about it, it doesn’t give much away about the genre of the cd or what the artist is like which adds to the mystery of the new artist. I didn’t give the album a name only the artists name because I feel it is a debut album therefore it didn’t really need to have a name. Having the blank space in the left hand corner makes your eye draw straight to the artist, I could have placed him in the middle but I felt it worked better with the artist on the side. I have also kept the font a simple one and used the colour black which compliments the darker clothing my artist is wearing as well as standing out well against the pale background. This then links back to the simple feel of the video, and the mixture of darkish colours along with the effect of black and white.
For my magazine advert I have used the same photo as on the album cover, this is so it relates back to the album when people see the advert. I have only put my artist’s name, the date the album is released and one review from a newspaper that my typical audience would read. It is simple much like the album cover, and yet it is effective. Same applies to my back cover, it all compliments each other especially with the feel and sound of the video. All three of these shots have the same sort of atmosphere around them, especially the clothing and backgrounds, the artist and female in the video and photo wearing blue, black and white complimenting both backgrounds of pale blue. (The sky for the video and background of the wall for the photos).
What have you learned from the audience feedback?
When I began to plan my music video I created a questionnaire to give to my target audience, the feedback gave me good ideas on where to go with my music video and what would be best to include. I knew the answers would be honest because it was anonymous so they wouldn’t be embarrassed. I have talked about the results of my questionnaires on my blog and how I would apply them to the music video. The only change I would have liked to of made to make sure it was applied would be to have the actual artist in the video along with him singing and playing the piano, I feel it ruins the video a little especially as this would be the debut track.
After my video was produced I did the same thing, and conducted interviews with a few of my target audience. Mostly all of the audience agreed with my opinion that there should have been more shots of the artist playing the piano along with shots of them singing. If I could re do my video again I would definitely anticipate for this and make sure I could include those shots. Although they felt that it let the video down they felt the video had many strengths, including the wide range of shots particularly the one of the couple arguing.

This shot had great feedback not only from some of my target audience but of my media class and teacher, being told it was well placed. After that I made sure every shot I filmed was placed well and that the mis-en-scene was appropriate.
They also said once of my weaknesses was a few of the shots moving a little, this was due to the wind on the day of the shoot but in future I will make sure the camera is still, filming again if it would be a problem.
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
I used technology in pretty much all aspects of my media a level, starting with the research which is where I used the internet to help find my artist searching band websites such as Myspace and through Facebook. I also used Google to look for unsigned artists as well as these two websites. - http://freeplaymusic.com/ - http://www.creativecommons.com/After searching for a long time I eventually came across Josh Holmes on Myspace, he went to my sixth form so I asked permission to use his song where he agreed. I kept him updated through Facebook and we regularly communicated trying to find a time to film.
I also created graphs and charts from my audience research on Excel to show my results in a different way. This proved effective and showed my findings in an easier way.

Filming my music video I used a digital camera which also allowed me to add effects to the clips such as black and white, or zoom in and out as well as changing the shot styles.
Editing my video I used a imac computer and the software imovie which allowed me to edit clips, add effects such as black and white and change the clips (like making them slow motion).

I used the paint application to copy and paste shots of my music video to put into my evaluation as well as my ancillary tasks.
Finally I used Blogger to put on all of my planning, research and evaluating onto the internet, it organised my documents well and allowed me to easily see what I have posted.
